Getting Married

Post by bpswain26 » Sun May 20, 2007 10:50 am

Dear All,

I have a new question!

My brasilian girlfriend is currently in the UK on a student visa until April 2008. We have been living together for just over a year and been togethr for 3. I proposed recently and she accepted so we plan to get married in December 2007.

However as she will not be returning until December she cannot fill out the paperwork that brasilian law requires 3 months before the wedding.

So... we are going to get married in a registary office before going to Brasil for the big wedding!

Brasilian law allows you to get married twice, one by civil law and the other in a church, strange I know!

What I want to know is how do I go about sorting out a registary office wedding, what documentation will we need? how much notice will we need, any help gratefully received!

Thanks Ben

I think you'll need a Certificate of Approval to Marry, dunno what it costs - 200 quid I think.

WRT to the actual marriage u should contact ur local Registrar but the norm is have lived in the locality for seven days to allow bans to be posted.

Hi, I'm just going through this process myself. You will first need a COA form (permission to marry in the UK), it's on www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk On the left you'll see "application forms" to click on and then scroll down to COA.

When you get the approval form, you need to register your intent to marry; I just did that today. I just googled Register Office and the name of the london borough I live in and got the website. Today I rang, and we have an appointment next Wednesday where we both have to go in to register our intent to marry . You'll have to bring your COA approval, passports, and proof of address. After that, you have to wait 15 days to marry. Today, I also booked our wedding day (June 15th).
Oh, the COA approval now costs 295 pounds, ouch!
