BRP Renewal After Expiry

Hi, I am a bit confused, What happens after someones BRP with NTL is expired (Obviously there would be no one yet who could have come across this situation as BRP for ILR/NTL are normally Valid for 10 years and the system has been in place only for some years).

Does it mean that once the BRP expires the holder has again got to go through the same process for renewal, like applying using NTL forms and cough out the same amount of money or even much more at that time.

This is just for interest and curiosity.
