This is an interesting article of some of the (extreme) cases of people turned down in the US when they applied for citizenship.

The UK process seems quite civilized in comparison, though I am sure there are a few bad stories here too.

Well, most trends happen in the US first, and then they are also adopted in the UK. This is an excellent example. So far the system is working quite well indeed, but there is a going number of cases in the UK where it gets very difficult for legitimate immigrants, just because they made a simple honest mistake.

And things are getting worse: the new refusal rules come into effect in October, and the immigration law overhaul is scheduled for next year. Once that is all done, I am sure the UK will reach parity with the US again. :-(
