Is there a minimum limit that a passport needs to be valid until, in order for a visa to be renewed?

For example, I am hoping to have my HSMP extended under Tier 1 in January/February 2009, but my passport expires June 2009. Will I need to renew my passport before renewing my visa, or does it not matter whichever I do first?

Thank you Vinny - that's very helpful.

It appears as though that passports with 1 month or less validity will probably not be stamped with a visa.
