Non-visa National Frequent Trips to UK - Red Flag?

Post by ukvisitorthrowaway » Tue Feb 15, 2022 3:00 pm

Hi,

I'm a non-visa national currently travelling in the UK (was given entry clearance as standard visitor). My plans have been to spend a few months here from January to March (with a short trip to an EU country in late February), then travel for 2 months or so before spending the summer here (June - August or so). I arrived in the UK in early Jan this year.

I'm aware that what I'm doing isn't illegal strictly speaking, but also that standard visitors shouldn't make the UK their de facto home. My home country is quite far from the UK and I haven't been back in a few years. I have previously lived in the UK under the working holiday scheme (for 1.5 years) and then studied in an EU country for 1.5 years. I did visit the UK for a week last October but otherwise hadn't been back since I moved away after my working holiday in the UK. I was hoping to use the UK as a 'hub' for backpacking/a gap year before I visit the US later this year and then finally return back to my home country. I do already have my flight booked, and I also have my plane ticket out of the UK for the end of March booked as well.

All my family is in my home country but I don't currently have a job lined up there. I don't personally own any property there, either. I'm wondering if my travel history might raise some red flags if I do end up needing to speak to someone at border control when I come back to the UK from my trip in February. I am financially independent but just am not sure if it will seem suspicious that I'm spending so much time in the UK this year. The amount of time I'll be in the UK this calendar year will be less than 180 days, for what that's worth (I know there isn't a hard and fast rule about this, but imagine it might help?).

I'd appreciate any guidance/advice anybody might have and whether or not it might be a bit risky for me to return to the UK, particularly for another long period after travelling through Europe for a couple of months.
