Which UK visa to apply to get married in the UK?

Post by Ibfuser17 » Sat Feb 03, 2024 4:50 pm

Hi members,

I'm a british citizen and would like to apply for the right visa for my girlfriend from Asia so that we can get married in the UK.

As per the uk gov link: https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-part ... or-ireland, they suggest to do the following:

- Apply for the right visa https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-part ... or-ireland
- Plan for the ceremony https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-part ... r-ceremony
- Give notice https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-part ... ive-notice

After reading the links above, my understanding is that I can book a ceremony in the UK based on the availability. As such my girlfriend would like to stay here with me in the UK post marriage, she will need to apply for family visa and not marriage visitor visa because the intention is not to go back to the home country.

Then we both need to give notice in person at the local register office 28 days before the ceremony. Followed by which she can stay in the UK, so the criteria for her to reside here for 7 clear days before the date of notice will be covered.

Can someone validate the above if you have any knowledge or personal experience of going through this process?

Please suggest/move this post to the right forum category if this is not the right one.

Thank you

If your intention is to marry in the UK and for your wife to then remain in the UK, you will need to apply for a fiance visa.

This will allow her to marry within 6 months and then apply for a Further Leave to Remain visa (FLR(M) from within the UK for a 2.5 year extension. After a further period of 2.5 years on a second FLR(M) visa, after completing 5 years in the UK as your spouse, she will then apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residence) SET(M) visa.

As your fiance's sponsor, you will be required to meet the minimum annual income criteria, which is due to increase in the Spring of 2024. The mandatory Immigration Health Surcharge (for NHS access) will also increase.
