Visitor Visa expires today but flights cancelled

Post by formulaonefan » Mon Feb 02, 2009 10:37 am

Hello,

My in-laws visitors visa expires today but their flight out of the country today is cancelled because of bad weather. What do we do now. I planned for them to check-in and wait in the airport after clearing the immigration but they wouldn't even check-in because flight is cancelled. So we would have to come back tomorrow. What do we do now?

Any ideas, suggestions please?

Not really gonna help you I don't think but this happened to me in Moscow, one of the benefits of a corrupt society help me out tho, bunged the chap a few dollars. Well, he took them actually, as a 'fine' - you don't even have to offer a bribe in Russia, they just take it...

Learnt my lesson tho, always leave a few days slack from flight date to visa expiry date......

Keep all the information pertaining to your original booking I suppose! I'm sure that Immigration control will have to exercise a little leeway in this situation, as I'm sure you woul;dn't be the only one affected.

Common sense, however, does not always prevail...

Well I don't think bribe is the way too go as it is illegal and booking flight before visa expires is too late to think about now.

Any other suggestions please? can I get a letter from the airline and provide it to immigration when they leave the country?

I think Wanderer's popst was tongue in cheek and he didn't really intend for you to try and bribe your way out of this situation. I think you should keep your booking reference, etc. and shjow it to immigration control as you leave the country. I would be hopeful that they would be reasonably fair to you in that situation.

As Wanderer mentioned above the onus of ensuring that the individual does not end up staying illegally in the country totally lies on that individual, and not UKBA. Hence it is always best to keep some lee way in between the travel date and visa expiry date to cater for scenarios like this one.
Having said that I do hope that your in-laws do not face much issues on their way out.

There is an immigration control at some Heathrow terminals on embarkations - but a delay of one or two delays will not be a problem for your return.

Every time I have flown out of heathrow in the last three years, they have done an immigration control. But you are right, they did not stamp passports.
