Possible To Renew Ancestry Visa ?

Hi

I was originally issued with an Ancestry Visa (Aug 2001)and leave to remain for 4 years.
After 6 months I left the UK, but now wish to return, but have only 3 months left on the visa.

Is it possible to get this extended or to reapply for a new Ancestry visa ?
