id cards

Post by yarons » Wed May 06, 2009 10:57 pm

Hi

Is there any requirement for immigrants from any scheme to hold an id card?

Quoting bbc website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8035002.stm

"Non-EU residents have been required to have identity cards since the end of last year."

Cheers

From the UKBA website:

"The identity card for foreign nationals is the first part of the National Identity Scheme and will be phased in between now and April 2011 for all those extending their stay in the United Kingdom or coming to the United Kingdom for more than six months. Since 25 November 2008, we have been issuing compulsory identity cards to foreign nationals granted an extension of their stay in the United Kingdom as a student or as the husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried or same sex partner of a permanent resident and their dependants on these applications. From 31 March 2009, subject to Parliamentary approval or regulations laid in February, more categories of applicants will be required to apply for an identity card as part of their immigration application."

Luckily they are wrong there: cards have been issued since last year, and if you have one, you are required to keep it up to date. But if you have not received one, you are (luckily) not affected.

That is not the only flaw in the article. The amount of data collect is vast (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informatio ... y_Register), and nobody in their right mind would want to be on there voluntarily.

This bit concerns me:
From 31 March 2009, subject to Parliamentary approval or regulations laid in February, more categories of applicants will be required to apply for an identity card as part of their immigration application."
Neither me nor my wife (Me ILR; her got ILR as a dependent) were given or were requested to obtain an id card. Are immigrants expected to follow announcements from the HO regarding this?

"...as part of their immigration application."
So unless/until you make an application, you don't have to do anything.
