Permit Free Training and Work Permit visa

I have a question regarding permit free training visa and work permit visa.
I understand that a postgraduate doctor can use permit free training visa for up to a maximum of 4 years in total.
Say I have been on permit free training visa for 1 year, and I switch to work permit for 1 year.
While in work permit visa, will I use up my permit free training visa also ? In other words, at the end of my work permit visa, will I have only 2 years remaining on my permit free visa, or will I still have 3 year left on my permit free visa ?
