Settling in the UK

Post by melissa81 » Tue May 17, 2011 6:29 am

Hi,

My boyfriend and i are currently in a long distance relationship for some time. He is an Irish and has been staying in London for more than 10 years. For me, I'm the citizen of Malaysia. We are now planning for our future and he was asking me to move to London to be with him in January 2012.

He will be coming to Malaysia on January and we will head back to London together. I'm wondering what sort of visa do i need to apply if i'd like to stay there permanently. Is that possible if i would like to apply for a visitor visa (For more than six months)? I was thinking to buy an air ticket (With open return ticket) and do you think the UK Border will not allow me to do that when i landed in Heathrow?

I would really appreciate if you could advice me on this.

Thank you very much.

You will more than likely be refused a visitors visa unless you prove to the UKBA that you will return home after it has expired.
You need to look at your relationship.
Are you planning to marry?
If so you can apply for a fiancee visa which will allow you in the UK for 6 months during which time you get married.
You can marry in Malaysia and apply for a spousal visa.

Have a look at the 2 visas that would be best for you to apply, talk to your partner and come to a decision

Hi Mochyn,

Thanks for the replied.

We haven't planned for marrying at the moment but i'm sure we will when i get there. In that case should i apply any visa when i stay there for 6 months?

I was thinking to buy a return ticket means i could show it to the UKBA that i'll be going home six months later. But do i still need to apply any visa for me to stay in the UK for six months? I got the feeling they will ask me why do i need to stay there for so long without working?

Many thanks for your help.

Having a return ticket is not proof of you wanting to return back to Malaysia for the UKBA.
You need things like letter from employer to say he is expecting you to return to work after vacation.
If you are not working there is no reason for you to return home after visa expires.
Easiest way is either spousal visa or fiancee visa
