Can students in the UK marry?

Hi

Can a student in the UK on a 1 year university postgrad course (orig pakistani) marry whilst on his visa and can he apply for a spouse/settlement visa within the UK or will he have to go back to Pak to apply?

What is the nationality/immigration status of the other partner?

What kind of visa/leave to remain does the student currently have?

He may certainly get married.

If the other partner is a British or settled person, he may then apply for Further Leave to Remain as a spouse, provided that the permission to be in the UK that he currently holds is for more than 6 months.

If the other partner is an EEA national exercising treaty rights he may apply for a Residence Card.

He's on a 1 year student visa from Pakistan and wants to marry a British citizen in the UK

DRS1983, the answer .... now .... to your question is yes, they can marry in the UK!

Until recently it was much more complicated, given there would have been the need to obtain a CoA ... a Certificate of Approval to Marry .... but the CoA scheme has been abolished, following Court decisions that went against UKBA.
