Regarding EDM's?

Post by aj77 » Mon Jun 19, 2006 3:41 pm

As we can see that almost 60 days are gone after filing EDM 1912,1992 and no discussion has been held yet.We know that these changes have been passed under the rule, according to which open discussion can not be held on the floor. But some of the Parliamentarians promissed us that they would insist Governent to allow them to discuss these changes on the floor.

I just wanted to know that either these EDM's are still valid or being expired now.
Same situation is with EDM 1989(Doctor's petition). That petition has 114 signatures but more than 60 days are gone.Is it still valid?

Can anybody clarify the procedure of EDM's.
If nobody bothers to discuss it in 60 days then what's the use of tabling the motion?

EDMs rarely lead to a discussion, except if they are "praying" for the rescinding of some regulations, the matter will get referred to a committee of the House ... such as is happening tomorrow.

The actual EDM rarely gets discussed as such, but that is not their purpose. Their process is to enable MPs to lay down in writing something of concern to them, or to congratulate someone or some body of people. An MP for a relevant constituency might table an EDM congratulating XYZ Football Club on getting promotion to the Premiership. No one expects that to be discussed.

MPs sometimes complain about the EDM procedure. There have been occasions when more than half the members of the House have signed an EDM .... and still it does not get listed for debate.

But as mentioned above, a committee of the House is debating HC 1016 tomorrow .... the change to the Immigration Rules effective on 03.04.06. So those EDMs have worked ... they have had the required effect .... a debate is happening ... albeit in a Committee.

John,
What is the possible outcome of the committee tomorrow?
Do they have any power to request a review? would it then be passed somewhere else?
thanks (just trying to understand how the process works)

John,
we became aware that Andrew Dismore applied on Friday for debating the issue in the Commons (he also thinks that a Standing Committee won't make a difference). Do you know who makes decisions of whether to include a debate in the agenda?
