Canadian Citizen, Irish Resident + Company, Living In Northern Ireland

Post by MelissaLawrence » Tue Jan 02, 2024 7:37 pm

Hi everyone! I'm a Canadian citizen living in the ROI (Stamp 4 residency following my Critical Skills Employment Permit). I work remotely for my ROI company, and am looking at moving to NI for a year or two to rent while I try to save up to buy a house in ROI (the housing crisis is spitting me out right now).

If I plan to continue to work for my ROI company, what implications will this have? Will I need to apply for residency in the UK and/or give up my residency in ROI?

I noticed that when applying for citizenship in ROI that it specifically says to prove you have lived in the island of Ireland (ROI and/or NI), so hopefully this wouldn't impact my long term plans to stay in ROI.

Thank you!

You'll need to apply for permission to live in UK. Once granted this will invalidate your ROI permission; you can't have both at once and your time in UK will not count towards Irish reckonable residency. You'll also need your ROI employer to be registered in UK and put you on UK payroll, pay UK taxes etc.

References to island of Ireland are only relevant for spouses of Irish citizens living in NI. They are the only exception that are allowed to live in NI and accumulate reckonable residency for Irish naturalisation.

Concur with what Vadrar says. If you do this move, you'd have to start from scratch (specicifically, get your CSEP/Stamp 1) on return to ROI, as all permissions have absence limits.
