Naturalise while working over the border?

Post by alistairmoody » Sun Sep 01, 2024 1:58 am

Hi everyone,

I'm a UK citizen and live and work in NI. If I moved over the border into the ROI but continued working in NI (by commuting daily), would it still be possible to gain Irish citizenship after 5 years?

Maybe, possibly. We cannot say what kind of requirement there'll be in 5 years re naturalization.

But as of now, it's theoretically possible. Keep in mind it'll take 6-7 years anyway with current processing times.
Also you'd need to show bank statements as proff of your residency in ROI, so you need to spend money there, in person, as well as properly register your rent (with RTB/etc).

That'd not be a problem, as I'd set up an Irish bank account and be renting / buy a house in the ROI, as well as doing all shopping etc. I'd just be driving over to NI for work and back. I was just curious as to whether this would work if some of the day was spent in the UK.
