Form 5 - Declaration of Intention to retain naturalization

Post by klick02 » Sun Jun 29, 2025 3:26 pm

Hi,
has any naturalised Irish citizen who lives abroad filled the form 5 regularly? I have been living outside (mostly UK/Europe) the state since a few years and I have done it every year, on some occasions I get a letter, while on others no response.
This time I received an email acknowledgement.
What are other people's experiences? Also if I live outside the state forever do I have to keep doing this forever?
Thanks

hi isn't that you have to fill in the form only if you continuously live outside Ireland for 7 years?

The legislation simply says you should complete this form every year, if you intend to live elsewhere for 7 years or more.

So basically even if you are completing the form every year and just forgot to do so in one year, in theory they can still revoke your citizenship once you have been out of the country for 7 years. I’m sure there is no appetite to do so whatsoever in the current coalition, but who knows whether the next person would be an orange blob.

I could see that UK and other countries do not impose any of such restrictions after naturalization.

Also what if somebody goes out of the state for 2, 3 or 4 years? Also if a child is born to that naturalized Irish citizen in that country what will be the implications then?

In my opinion one should not bother filling in the form in the first place if you are sure you won't be out for less than 7 years.
