Error on certificate of citizenship

Post by Elmaelt » Thu Dec 18, 2025 7:23 pm

Hi

I would appreciate your advice on this, specifically if you have been through a similar situation.
Upon receiving my payment letter I noted a mistake, my country of birth is incorrect! Other information such as my name, date of birth, nationality and address are all correct ! I have sent them a query to notify them with the issue and paid the certificate amount. I later received a reply to the query that the issue was directed to the team who deals with this .

I then attended the ceremony but when the certificate itself arrived it showed the same mistake ( not fixed)

I heard any wrong detail in the certificate will cause issues when applying for passport! Therefore I have returned my certificate with a cover letter explaining the mistake.

Then is now more than two month since I have returned the certificate and I have not heard anything . I have already sent a query on the portal ( a month now ) and there is no response! The only thing I have noticed is my citizenship application status changed from application completed many month ago to in progress again ( a month ago)
I am not sure what to do anymore?

Is there ever a number to contact? Should I actually just go physically to their office! It’s becoming very frustrating at this stage

I can’t give an authoritative answer but what I would say is that the status indication on the portal is _very_ coarse. That is to say there are only the five options to display - so the fact of the change is likely to indicate that someone is looking at it. There are several stages where the guidance indicates what to do if there is an error - people report name issues with Garda vetting quite regularly. I can see that your position is not a happy one but it seems from what you say that someone must be looking into the error.

I am sure that there will be an update in due course when the error is determined, as you indicate it should, to be finger trouble somewhere. They will obviously and quite properly be checking to ensure that your documents did not get mixed up with those of another applicant.

If you are really dissatisfied and very anxious, people on this forum seem to report good outcomes (ie immediate movement) after writing to their local TD.
