Irish Spouse Visas

Post by artefactfinder » Mon May 11, 2009 7:54 pm

Hi,

I am exploring my options and would really love some advice. I am from Northern Ireland but have an Irish passport but I have never permanently lived in the Republic of Ireland. I am married to a US citizen and am currently living in the USA but we want to move to Europe. After getting married my spouse obtained a UK spouse visa and we moved to Northern Ireland for one year and then returned to the USA in 2007.

We now want to move back to Ireland...we don't really care if we live north or south of the border. I'm pretty clear on the UK spouse visa process but I've been trying to research the process of how we obtain a Irish spouse visa for my husband if we decide to live in the Republic of Ireland. I really haven't been able to find a clear description of the process. Do we apply for a visa for him before we leave the USA? Can he work in the Republic of Ireland if he is granted a visa.

If someone could give a good succinct description of the visa process or point me in the direction of a good website or another post describing the process i would really really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hi artefactfinder,

Your Amerian husband is non-visa required national.

According to The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) website, your husband could enter Republic of Ireland as a visitor without visa, and would be given a permission to stay(usually 90days) at the airport immigration desk.

So, find a place to live and get an evidence of your joint address (for example, bank statement or electricity bill).
Then go to GNIB or local Garda Station before the permission's expire date with these listed documentation on the website.
Your original marriage certificate
Your original passport
Your Irish spouse’s original passport
Evidence of your joint address

He should be given Stamp 4 straight away.

It allows him to work.

Hope this information helps you.

Have you thought about staying in the United States long enough to get your American citizenship?

And does your spouse want the option of applying for British citizenship as well as Irish citizenship (if yes, then you should look at Northern Ireland).
