Tax credits/NI Query

Post by sweet » Sat Oct 11, 2008 3:20 pm

Does anyone know how long after submitting a tax credit claim it takes to the issuing of an NI number. It's already been 2months since my husband sent a tax credit claim ,he phoned the helpline and was told we should wait to hear from the jobcentre for an NI number interview.Any ideas on how much longer it's going to be.

Bit confused, if you don't have an NI number how is he managing to work? Is he allowed to work and on what basis does he have leave to be in the UK?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Found your earlier posts - husband is a Brit Cit but that begs another question - why does he not have an NI number in the first place? Assume was born or stayed outside of the UK for some time?

Waiting time is usually about a month, which went by sometime ago in your case. In some parts of the UK it takes longer due to local demand.
Suggest you call DWP helpline and find out what is happening AND get confirmation of the application is in the system.

Thanks for replying.Yes my husband is a British Citizen and has lived here all his life.He does have a NI number .I'm the one who doesn't have an NI number as I'm an asylum seeker.
My husband does work and he did call the tax credits helpline and they confirmed they did have his tax credits claim. They told him to wait till the jobcentre contacts me for an NI number interview. They told him there's no point contacting the jobcentre ourselves.

Got my NI number now,10 days after going for the interview. The interview was very basic ,only lasted about 10 minutes.MY husband has already called the tax credits office to let them know so hopefully it won't be long now till they pay him.I can't believe how long it has taken for the process to go through, about 3 months.Anyway it's worked out in the end....
