Tier 2 General - Question of switching employment

Hello everyone,

I am on Tier 2 general visa. My visa expires on 30th Jan 2015.

I am about to start application for new visa for my new employment. Assuming everything goes as planned as I do get my new Tier 2 general visa, say from 15th November, would my first visa (which is valid till 30th Jan) become invalid on commencement of second visa? Or first visa would remain valid till I join the second employer (again assuming I join the second employer later than the start date of second visa)

I am just not sure when should I resign from my current job as I do not know how long my first visa is going to be valid after I get second visa.

So if my current visa expires on end of End of Dec 2014. My new visa starts on end of Nov 2014. Can I continue to work for current employer till mid-December and then join the new employer after around that time?
