Tier 2 General work visa under 'up to 3 years category', was approved for 4 years (June 2016 to June 2020)

Hope you are well !

I have an interesting 'Tier 2 General extension' situation.

Back in JUNE 2016, my tier 2 general visa was approved under 'up to 3 years category', but it was issued for 4 years (From June 2016 to June 2020). Weird right, i know !

Because it was applied under up to 3 years category and the IHS fee (£600) was only paid for 3 years, now do we need to apply for extension in June 2019 (after 3 years) or June 2020 (after 4 years as per visa validity) ?

We do not want to get into any trouble for overstaying (in case if home thinks we should have applied for extension after 3 years)

I would love to hear from if anyone has faced the same issue before or any suggestion would help.

Did you not report about that error after receiving the BRP in June 2016?
Generally the letter accompanying BRP mentions how you can contact UKVI and under what circumstances (errors, spelling mistakes in names, etc.), so ideally you should've gone back to them.

Check your visa approval letter and see what's mentioned under "End of leave" date and see whether it matches with what's on your BRP or not.

Not sure what you need to do now (probably contact UKVI heldesk?) but do wait for advice from senior members.
