Can an overstay in Greece on a student visa 7 years ago affect my application?

Post by MrBard » Sat Jan 18, 2025 2:59 pm

My application is currently under review for 5 weeks (I live in Russia so it’s ok). I’ve got a job offer from a big-tech company.

7 years ago I overstayed my student residence permit for one year. I left the country voluntarily at my own expenses, I wasn’t deported or required to leave, just was fined. There wasn’t any discussion about re-entry ban, I never tried to visit Greece again so I literally had no idea about the circumstances.

Two years ago I applied for the UK visitor visa, and I didn’t mention this incident there because I didn’t know if I have to. There was no question like “have you ever overstayed anywhere” (except of the UK itself), only a question regarding deportations/bans etc. I was refused because of insufficient income.

Also worth to mention that I’ve got a Cyprus work residence permit (2 years) in 2022 and left the country in time before it was expired.

So now I applied for Skilled Worker visa. Using an advice from my assistance I mentioned all of it in my application and attached a cover letter with all the details.

What are my chances to be approved?

The way you're phrasing the question in name of the topic and in post body is vastly different.

Will the overstay affect your application - yes, but not necessarily in a negative way. As long as you were honest, I'd expect it to go fine, as it was a while ago. I wouldn't really worry about that (especially at this point, when its already submitted - you can't change anything now, no need to stress).

Don't think people here can give you the exact chance of approval.

Your honesty will go a long way is pushing the application to a grant then not declaring it. If there is an eagle eyed caseworker that picks up you did not declare your immigration history previously then it could get messy.
Having stuck to the rules for Cyprus helps but negatives undeclared in the past can haunt you.

Good luck
