Work Permit and taking sabbatical

Hello,

I was granted a five year Work Permit approximately in september 2008. I believe this was under the old Work Permit system.

For personal reasons, I have asked my employer if they could allow me to take a sabbatical for a period of 6 - 12 months which they agreed to. I intend to spend this period within the UK.

My question is: Are extended periods of leave such as taking a sabbatical permitted or could it invalidate my work permit?

Any answers would be much appreciated.
