Employer licence renewal

Hi Everyone, I am enquiring this on behalf of one of my friend. My Friend's company, tier 2 general licence expires in 2013 , but he is thinking about it renewing it now , a year before its expiry. Is he allowed to renew his licence a year before the expiry?
