Advise request on REFEREES

Hi,

I want to get signed my AN form with a referee who is my friend for the past several years and got his British Passport a year back. He is a store manager working for 99p stores ltd for the past 8yrs. Just wondering can he sign as a referee as it was given in the list of acceptable referees list (Director/Manager/Personnel Officer of a VAT registered Company). Please comment on this can his be acceptable and if yes, can he give his referee details to my wife's application as we both submitting at same time as a couple.
