Returning BRP but travel scheduled

Post by Jonnystar » Thu Feb 20, 2020 10:15 pm

Hi all

I just received my citizenship certificate and I am in the process of applying for my British passport along with my family. However I do have some travel planned for the middle of March on business and not sure if I will get my new passport by then. I would therefore need to use my existing passport. I can send my families BRP back but I may need mine until I get my new passport.

If I return my BRP I will probably not be allowed to enter the country and if I do not then will be fined £1000 pounds.

What options do I have ?

Since you have attended your ceremony, you are now a citizen, therefore your BRP is no longer valid and should be returned to avoid getting fined. If your travel is in mid March, I think you have enough time to get your passport. If there are no issues, you can get it in 2 weeks. I will suggest you submit your passport application immediately.

Thanks the passport application has been submitted and I will be sending the docs over today.

Just planning worst case here and hoping for the best. Would I be able to enter back in on the basis of a copy of my naturalisation certificate with my old unexpired passport.

You will most likely be allowed entry to the UK as a citizen, the problem is that no airline will allow you to board a flight to the UK without a valid visa or British passport. So the answer is no, you cannot travel with the copy of naturalisation certificate. it is not a travel document. it's good to plan for the worst case, but I believe you should get your passport before mid march if you don't have any complexity in your application.
