Baby's first UK passport from India

Post by Sameer81 » Mon Mar 04, 2024 9:43 am

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone could guide me as I have gone through different posts but there are still some questions which I am not sure.
I got British Citizenship by naturalization in 2021 and my wife has ILR. We are in India now, and blessed with a baby boy recently.
I'm following all details and guidance from here to apply for his British passport - https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/ove ... hild/india

My appointment is scheduled in few weeks time, but due to urgent work I need to fly back to UK.
So I got few questions-
1. In my absence, can my father-in-law go to the appointment to submit the documents?
2. Does he need to carry any extra documents?
3. Does document list contain my original British passport? As I'll be flying back, I can't give that. But, can keep original naturalization certificate if needed?

Please can someone help me..

2. Does he need to carry any extra documents? if mother goes then no further documents required - don't know whether FIL needs authorisation to act on behalf of child? Ask the agent? But mother shouldn't have an issue with that.
3. Does document list contain my original British passport? don't think so. As I'll be flying back, I can't give that. But, can keep original naturalization certificate if needed? All required documents should be in original. Nat Cert should be on there which is proof of citizizenship.

Please can someone help me..

This may not be possible, but I was wondering how long will you stay in the UK and if you could be flexible on dates - in that case, you could apply for your child's passport from the UK and get it much quicker.

If applying within the UK there's a one week fast track available for children, irrespective of whether it's first passport or not.

Yes, definitely worth considering a fast track application while you are in the UK. Applying for passports from abroad takes a very long time.

Ohh... Is it possible? Wasn't aware of this option at all!
If this is possible then how the process will be?
1. Apply for baby's British passport from UK, what documents needed for this?
2. Apply for baby's OCI from UK
3. Bring baby's passport and OCI with me, when coming to India
Please correct me here.

FYI, I don't have any urgency to bring family back, they will be in India for next 6 months atleast.

You can apply online, documents needed are the same, your certificate of naturalisation and baby' birth certificate I think. You can also apply for fast track. I don't know about OCI as that sits with Indian legislation.

It's still confusing!
When I start the apply process, there is this message-
Important
If you’re applying on behalf of an adult or child, answer these questions with their details rather than your own.

That means, 1st question- Do you live in the UK is NO, which goes to overseas application form!

Ah fair enough. You would need to bring your child with you then I suppose to apply from the UK.
