ILR to British Citizenship?

Is this mandatory and what are the differences between the 2 arent they the same thing is it worth paying all that money and paperwork for British citizenship?

Also, after how many years can you apply for British citizenship?

1 year after ILR as spouse assuming there has been a minimum of 3 years legal residence in the UK.
Under current regulations BC isn't mandatory (i.e matter of choice) but under Probationary Citizenship scheduled for July 2011 everyone will be expected to apply for nationality or leave the UK. Unless they are excluded from applying for dual nationality by their birth country.
This is of course if the present Government make no changes to the proposed Citizenship regulations.
