Applying For ILR Uk Citizenship over 18 Yrs Old

Hi,
I currently live in New York. I was born in the UK to American parents in 1988. My parents received their ILR status after I was born. Just from reading various passport forums and from looking at the UK passport site I am led to believe that I needed to apply for UK citizenship before I was 18. I am now 24 years old and have recently graduated from university and am very interested in working in the UK hence my interest into this matter. My parents were not aware of this rule back when we lived in the UK and had no idea that they had to register me before I was 18 and had no idea that it was even possible for me to become a UK citizen. Now I am desperate to see if it is still possible to become a UK citizen even though I am now over 18. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
