Hi,
Sorry, this may be a silly question, but is that what they mean by HM Revenue & Customs Self Assessment Statement of Account?

That's the self-assessment you fill with HMRC, usually done by people who are responsible for their own taxes. For example- self employed person, limited company holder.
If you are an employed or pay taxes through PAYE then this does not apply to you.

I was self-employed for a while but I did not earn anything. So, I guess I will have to give them my tax return (self-assessment) or should I ask HMRC for some sort of letter?

I`m pretty sure that I get one like this every year after my tax return is done.

thats what I was sending with my application and it was good enough to approve it.
