Hi,

I will be applying for BC next week, everything looks good except the fact that one of my old address (4 years back), i stayed in shared accomodation for sometime and didn't got myself registered at local council.

i didnt signed the house contract and also didnt paid any council for that period of 6 months as it was weekly rent inclusive of council, and not sure if the landlord actually paid it to council. I have few quick questions appreciate if you guys can suggest

- will it effect on my bc application ?
- my current council tax is up to date for last 4 years, no pending dues.
- i didnt received any notices as i was not registered at council, no court notices... etc.
- will it be a good idea to call council and register now for that period (4 years back) and pay the council if not paid for that period ?

Cheers...
Nazir

It's not always easy to determine who is responsible for council tax. I would hazard a guess that you were responsible for the council tax pro rata. However, if you were living in a house of mulitple occupation then your landlord would be responsible for council tax. There may gave been an excemption if you were all students. If the landlord paid the council tax then there is no issue. I would go to the cab and find out if you were even responsible For council tac before ringing them. This will not affect your application. For future reference if you're eligible (i.e. commonwealth citizen) then it's a legal requirement to register on the electoral roll where you are normally residing.

Thanks for your reply,

I was not a student at that time, so council tax exception was not applicable to me, however i dont have any means to track down if the council was been paid or not as the landlord is not contactable, also its been almost 4 plus years.

In summary what should i be doing ?
- should i proceed with application ?
- should i ring council ?
- any way of finding out this data.... bit worried that it may impact my application !

Anyone who actually experienced this situation ?

Proceed with the application and go to the cab and find out if you were liable for council tax.
