Hi everyone,

I was wondering if personal debts affect in any way application for British nationality. My husband is currently on debt management plan helping him to tackle debts. He's considering to enter into an IVA which is a kind of insolvency (but not the same as bankruptcy). He will become eligible to apply for his British nationality next year. If he decides to enter into an IVA, would that affect his application?

Providing the applicant is showing an intention to pay the debts there should be no issue. If the applicant is declared bankrupt then until discharged they will likely be rejected.

Don't forget that if the applicant has any CCJs they must be disclosed under 'civil judgements'.
