The Direct.Gov website suggests that a Fast Track application for a first passport for a child is possible by prior appointment. Noting that no one has used this route, I just wanted to confirm if this is indeed the case for a child applying via the Section 1 (3) registration route [we have the certificate of registration and other documents)

Am I also right in understand that my son can receive a british passport even though both parents have ILR only since Feb 2012 (we are eligible for british passports but have not made the applications for personal reasons)

You cannot get British passports unless you are British. In your case (adults) you must be naturalised, having ILR is not sufficient and the child must be registered as British unless s(he) was born in the UK after you had been granted ILR.

May I just clarify this:

My son (born in the UK in 2006) is registered as a British Citizen. His certificate of registration was issued in June 2012.

But you say, we cannot apply for a passport for him??

Both his parents are Indian, have received ILR in 2012, may consider British passports in the future but not at this time. But if my son who is registered as a British Citizen cannot apply for a British passport (and is no longer Indian), how is he expected to travel overseas??!!

Your original post made it sound like you were registering your Child as British. If he is already registered then he is British and can apply for a passport whenever you want. The parents would have to naturalise prior to getting their British passports. There is no need to fast track the application unless travel is urgent.

Fast track takes one week and requires travel to the passport office.
Normal application takes 2-3 weeks.

Your choice.

Thanks for clarifying this - my original post was perhaps clumsily worded.
We are planning Fast Track as we intend to travel in 5 weeks or so.

The rest of us are eligible for British passports but are not in any particular rush pending other priorities.

If both parents have ILR but do not wish to become BC at this time, can my daughter born in India, now with ILR in her own right for over 12 months, proceed to BC?

It was suggested to me she can't until at least one parent gains BC.


[This is un-related to my son who has now received his British Passport in 2 days via Fast Track service at London Passport Office. Thanks for advice on that account]
