Passport number of referee in MN1

Hi,
I am applying for the citizenship of my child. In the referee section of form MN1, how mandatory is to provide the passport number of the referee?
Reason i ask is there are referees who are eligible but not comfortable proving passport number as it is personal data.
Can it be left blank?
Also noted in form AN (Adult Naturalisation) referee passport number is optional as it mentions "if any" where as it is not mentioned in MN1.
Thanks

One of the referees must be a British citizen. If this referee is the one that doesn't want to provide their passport number, it would be more difficult to prove they are a valid referee.
I'm not sure if this is critical, as they could always write to the referee and ask for more information, but consider getting a different one that will actually provide the information asked for on the form.

If it is professional referee then they can mention "Available on Request".

For my daughter's application we used her headteacher as the professional referee; she was a UK citizen who did not possess a passport
&
2) the mother of a school friend; a non-professional person but age over-25;
she was a naturalised British citizen and did give her passport number.
The point is the professional person had no number to give.
The application was processed quickly & was successful.
If the referee you refer to is a professional with a British passport I believe they can put "available on request" (as mentioned above).

Is it mandatory that at least one referee should write his passport number? How about if both referees don't agree to give their passport numbers.?

The first referee (a professional) does not have to have a British passport, they just have to be a professional.
According to the guide notes
The other referee must nomally be the holder of a British passport and either a professional person or over the age of 25

I understand a professional person can put "Available on Request" on the form so HO would have to follow up with them privately.
It means the person doesn't share the passport number with you but still has to be prepared to disclose the number to HO.
If they are not able to do this then, just to be on safe side, try to find another referee.

fyi - from UK gov Chapter 6 (caseworking instructions):
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 50429_.pdf
6.3.7.9 Those acting in a professional capacity may not wish to provide their personal details. In such cases, we would be content for the person acting as a referee to put his or her business contact details.
In addition, if the person does not wish their passport details to be seen by the person applying for citizenship, they can omit this from the form, entering “details available on request”.
