English Requirement for NATURALISATION

Hi there,

My friend would want to apply for her Naturalization next month. She had passed the Life in the UK test and also obtained a certificate from UKNARIC (statement of comparability) with her degree certificate. Now that, does this two requirements would be sufficient to obtain her Naturalization? Or does she need to write any other English test to prove her (Speaking and Writing skill). Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

If her degree was taught in a country which is not considered English speaking then she'll either need a English Language Assessment from UK NARIC.

She can also see if the PBS Calculator would award her degree 10 pts and if it does, print off the screen shot of this.
The points based calculator http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/pointscalculator. You can dummy most questions, but on the English Skills Requirement, put in your degree information, and it will say if you're awarded 10 points. You would need to print off the screen the shows the 10 points awarded for English Skills against your degree details along with the original degree certificate. If there are 0 points awarded for English Skills, then your degree won't meet the requirement.
If the PBS system doesn't award points for English Skills or UK NARIC doesn't deem the course to be taught to the requisite level then she'll have to sit an English test. See (http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitec ... -tests.pdf)

Hi,

The Guidance Notes associated to Form AN states that we need to provide Certificate shoing htat the qualicicarion deemed by UK NARIC and English Language Assesment from UKNARIC, please see the point 3 below.

I dont think PBS printout is sufficient, please check and advise

Evidence of knowledge of Language and of Life in the UK

Letter confirming success in the Life in the UK Test, stamped and signed by the Test Supervisor; and either

Certificate showing that you have a speaking and listening qualification in English at B1 CEFR or higher, or an equivalent level qualification; OR

Certificate showing that you have obtained an academic qualification deemed by UK NARIC to meet the recognised standard of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or PhD in the United Kingdom and (i) an English Language Assessment (ELA) from UK NARIC confirming that the qualification was taught or researched in English or (ii) the qualification was taught or researched in the UK or a majority English speaking country (other than Canada); OR

I am also confused with conflicting information from UKBA.

In the Form AN and Guide AN, they haven't mentioned anything about PBS Calculator but in the link below it is mentioned that if the qualification is recongnized in PBC it is enough to show it as proof.

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/briti ... ification/

I am totally confused now. Please help.

I was in the same confusion and this is the reply I got from the UKBA..

Dear Sir,

We will accept a print out from the points calculator as evidence of English language for a naturalisation application, provided it shows that the degree was awarded at least 20 points for comparability to a UK degree, and an additional 10 points for English language,

I trust this is helpful

xxxx

Also, see the below excerpt from

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/briti ... ification/

A printout from the points-based calculator confirming the equivalent level of your degree and the level of English; or

Behind the Guide is an entire set of rules set out in legislation and policy. It will not include everything you may need - but should address the most common issues.

As you've linked, it is UKBA policy (in addition to what is set out in the Guide) to accept the PBS calculator print-out. This is also verified by the email response aruni4470 received from UKBA. A number of applicants have used the PBS calculator print-out along with their original degree certificate as proof that they satisfy this requirement.

Thanks for your replies.

May be I am too pessimistic in this issue.

I have checked the timelines of various applicants who applied for Naturalizaion with PBS printout but all of them are still waiting for Approval decision. I haven't seen a case where the applicant applied with PBS printout after Oct 23 and got his/her application approved.

This is the reason I was worried and posted the question.

Quick Update,

I too got a reply mail from UKBA stating that PBS printout is sufficient.
So it is not required to get NARIC letter if the degree is recognised in PBS and points are awarded.

Hi prasad, could you please forward me the email which you got from HMRC ( atul_temp@forward.cat ) . I have mailed HMRC and have not got any confirmation back from them. Though I am going to use the printout, it might help to have a copy of this email as well.

Thanks

Please can someone share the email from UKBA confirming that the PBS printout is sufficient to prove the language requirement. Alos please can you share the emailID on which you have posted the query to UKBA.
I am also confused about which option to select on the form under the evidence of knowledge of language and life in the UK section of the Form AN. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

I have taken ILR on Feb,2013 (hsmp+Tier1 5 year route) and was planning for taking citizenship.

I have a query about english requirement. I can see my degree (taught in India) getting 30 points in the point based calculator. I also have a degree certificate and a letter from the uni saying that the degree was taught in english which I can submit along the application.

According to the notes here, https://www.gov.uk/english-language, it doesnt seem to be necessary for me to take the naric route or exams like ESOL to prove knowledge of english language. But could someone please confirm whether my assumption is correct?

Many Thanks,
alladin

Hi,

From the point based calculator, I can see I get 30 points for the degree and 10 points for English language. I hope this should meet the requirement for knowledge of English language.

Thanks,
alladin

Hi,

Can someone forward me the email from UKBA regarding acceptance of Point based calculator printout. I contacted my local council for nationality checking service and they are unaware of this and say they can only accept a letter from UK NARIC. Kindly email me on prakash191281@gmail.com

Also kindly let me know if I should tick the following two columns on Form AN:

I have obtained an academic qualification deemed by UK NARIC to meet the recognised standard of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or PhD in the United Kingdom and:
(i)
UK NARIC has confirmed that the qualification was taught or researched in English;

Regards,

Cash

Hi,

Did you get points for degree and English language separately? because when I tried the Calculator, it showed me points only for English language (10 points), but i can't see anything for Degree, which I guess is important.

I used the link for PBS from this page https://www.gov.uk/english-language

PBS: https://www.points.homeoffice.gov.uk/gu ... ment.faces

I also spoke to my local council re the English eligibility and they confirmed that they will accept PBS calculator printout as evidence, but it should show atleast 20 points for Degree.

Thanks

Sri

I did get points for degree. Is your awarding institution listed in the available list?

Yes, its listed, and I used the same PBS calculator successfully for my ILR application last year.

What I am not able to get is the points for Degree separately. I can see points for overall, salary, maintenance, english language, but not degree.

I am not sure in this case as I can see my degree listed. Is there any chance your degree from the awarding institution's has been been removed from NARIC database?

The university and the degree is still listed in the calculator. I think the problem lies in the first question, if you choose Tier 2, then you wont see points for degree, and if you choose Tier 1, you will see points. Don't know the reason behind it, but I saw it in another thread, where someone in Tier 2 had to do it as Tier 1 to get the points printout. I am going to have to try the same.

thanks

Probably that explains this. I didnt try this with Tier2.
