I am bit confused what date to put in section 2.1 the first arrival in UK in the AN1 form.
The reason behind I first came to UK during 26-JAN-2007 on a business visa and not intended to stay for long term basis.
I then returned to UK after 1 months on a Work Permit visa during 19-AUG-2007 intended to stay long term.

In this case could you please assist which date I need to enter in section 2.1 either 26-JAN-2007 or 19-AUG-2007 ?

Date you arrived to stay on long term basis, so that would be the latter date.

i saw this thread and it relates to my posotion somewhat.

i came to uk on a student visa in 2004 but then i switched my visa in 2008 with a view to stay long term but i did not enter the uk as i was in uk so what should i write just switched visa and no port?

2004 which is the year you came to the UK for a long term stay (not as a tourist). The guidenotes are misleading.
