Urgent Help Please - travel for children without Passport?

Hi all/senior members,
Please can someone suggest; kids born last year and I'm on Tier 2 General. In couple of months time qualify for ILR, so didn't get any passports for the kids as thought of applying on MN1 first thing after the ILR and avoid all the steps of surrendering one passport/nationality etc. and taking up another.
Looking at the current times for MN1s though, it seems the travel plans we had for Jan 2015 will not work out as MN1 won't be processed by then
Can someone please advise on the possibilities of making this travel possible to go out of the UK with the children to India? Don't really want to go through and get the indian passports for them first and then get the MN1s sorted in few months time.
Wondered if at all this is possible somehow ?
