MN1 - Registration of a child from overseas

Hi

Hope somebody on here can shed some light on my questions, I'm finding the Home Office website no use at all.

I'm a British citizen in a defacto relationship with an Australian and we have a child born here in Australia. I wish to register him as a British citizen.

I'm using form MN1 but I'm confused by the guide as to what documentation I need to forward to Liverpool.

They ask for;

Childs Birth Cert
Parent marriage Cert
British parents birth cert or passport
British Grandparents birth cert
Grandparents marriage cert
Evidence of residence

Do I need all these documents?
I'm guessing the ones relating to the Grandparents are unnecessary if I send my birth cert?
Do I need to send originals?
How do I get originals back to Australia safely?
What is evidence of residence?

Thanks for any help you can offer

Stressful stuff!

Are you British from birth? Were you born in the UK? Unlike Australia, the UK doesn't require British citizens (from birth) to register to obtain their citizenship. It is granted automatically (to children born abroad to British citizen not by decent)

Yes I'm British from birth and his Mum is Australian. So you are saying I can directly apply for his passport without the citizenship application?

The information I got from the Passport website suggested otherwise, not that I hold much faith in their system.

Thanks for your reply

Like Jambo asked were you born in UK?

If yes then he's already replied in my view.
