I am trying to register as a UK Citizen using Form UKM: Application for registration as a British Citizen by a person born before 1983 to a British mother. I am a U.S. Citizen and currently reside in the U.S. Do I need to surrender my original passport or can I send a certified copy? I am nervous about not having my passport for potentially 6 months as I often travel for work and am also nervous about the passport getting lost.

You can request a return of your passport after you get your application number email confirmation. Just email the Further Nationality uk email address and they will get it back to you in 10 days.

Original is required. Be prepared to part with it for up to 4-6 months. Mine took about 4 months. Lately it has been getting faster based on what I have seen from others.

UKM registration is an entitlement and there is no statutory requirement that applicants even possess a passport, let alone submit it.
