European citizen wishes to apply

Hi all,
I need an advice.
In these past few days I have been looking into applying for British naturalisation. I am from Italy and been living in the UK since September 2008 (almost 7 years).
I have never applied for the Permanent Residence (PR) card - I wasn't aware of its existence. Do I need to apply for it and wait for 1 year before submitting an application for British naturalisation? I have found contrasting information on the web. If I have understood it correctly, as long as I can prove I have been living/studying in the UK for the past 5+1 years, I do not need any Permanent Residence card - even though having one would speed up the application considerably.
