Few Doubts: Applying for Naturalisation (Form - AN)

Hi All,

Need some help in clarifying few doubts before I apply for my British Passport:

As per my Indian Passport (which expires on 27-6-2016)
Name: Mini Kapur
Surname: (blank)

As per my BRP (issued on 26-3-2013)
Name: Mini Kapur
Second line is blank

I had completed my 5 years in UK on 06-03-2016.
I am applying my Form - AN and need to add my surname now (post my marriage - Name: Mini Kapur and Surname: Bhatia) for my British Passport.
Can I do so while filling my Form - AN and update the "Further Information" section and also attach my Indian Marriage Certificate (My husband got his UK passport on 23-10-2013 and my baby was born in UK in 2013)

Please advice.

Thanks & Regards,

You can only change your name for your naturalisation application if your Indian passport has been updated. HO will only approve citizenship and HMPO will only issue a passport, in the name that appears in your foreign passport.

Thanks for the reply CR001.

I will apply the same name as in my Indian Passport, but since the surname is blank ....... Can I add my surname in the Form - AN and attach my marriage certificate too and mention in reasons in the further information section.

Thanks & Regards,

You cannot add a name that does not appear in your Indian passport. If you want your 'married name', you will need to update your Indian passport first.

HO/HMPO are quite strict regarding this to avoid people having multiple identities using different names.

It is not the same name!

Your name is as shown in your identity document (the Indian passport):
Name: ABC DEF
Surname: Blank.

You may think that your name is ABC and surname DEF, but this is not proved unless this is displayed so in your identity document.

You may get away with it in AN application ... but you will have a major problem when applying for a British passport.

Thanks for confirming.

So, I can apply with same name in Form - AN and leave my surname as blank.

Will that be fine ..... Can I later apply for a British Passport without a surname (but same name as in my current Indian Passport)

Regards

Your British passport will have your full name as your surname as HMPO is unable to leave 'surname' blank.

Sorry now I am a bit confused .....

So for applying my Form - AN:
Name: Mini Kapur
Surname: Blank

And later for applying my British Passport:
Name: Mini Kapur
Surname: Mini Kapur?

"Your British passport will have your full name as your surname as HMPO is unable to leave 'surname' blank."

If your foreign passport has the following:
Name: ABC DEF
Surname:

then your British passport will have the following:
Name: XXX
Surname: ABC DEF

Thanks geriatrix

Please guide me how can I have the name added to my British Passport (don't want it to be blank). Or, do many people are in similar situation with no name in their passports !!

My Indian passport will expire next month and don't want to make changes to that one ........

Don't want to pay for making changes in Indian passport and renewing it first, and then applying for Form - AN.

Regards,

Once you have your British passport, apply for a deed poll to change your name and then reapply with the deed poll for a second British Passport.

Thanks CR001.

A last request, this process will cost how much more ................ "Once you have your British passport, apply for a deed poll to change your name and then reapply with the deed poll for a second British Passport."

Your guidance is highly appreciated :)

£72-50 for a passport application. For a deed poll, it depends which way you do it. See Change Name Deed Poll (click). Then once done, passport application fee again of £72-50.

My Indian passport expires on 26 June 2016, can I still apply my Form - AN next month after 26th June 2016 or I should do it before my passport expires.
