You have created this post under the wrong category then. Moderator will probably move it to where it belongs.
Anyway Its on the day 5 years before the application is received by the Home Office.
Page 5 of the requirement booklet :
You must have been physically present in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands on the day 5 years before the application is received by the Home Office.
For example if your application is received on 20/1/2015 you should have been physically present in the United Kingdom on 21/1/2010.
Most applications that fail do so because applicants have applied even though they cannot satisfy the residence requirement to be present in the UK at the beginning of the residential qualifying period.
I hope it helps.

Moved.
If applying for BC under the 5 year standard route (not as the spouse of BC) the applicant must have been present in the UK on the equivalent date 5 years previously:
Applying through the NCS = the date the application is handed in.
Applying by post = the date the Home Office receive the application.

Hi Guys,
Just need a quick confirmation.
If I apply for Naturalisation on 08/1/2017 via NCS and if the home office receives my application on 24/1/2017 then under the 5 year rule do I need to present in UK on 08/1/2012 ( 5 year before the date application was made at NCS) or 24/1/2012 ( 5 year before the date home office receives my application).
Thanks in advance
Devilish.
