Hi, so this all seems somewhat confusing to me.

I am a british citizen not by descent as I understand it (born in the UK to british parents/grandparents etc) I have been travelling and working abroad for a good 3-4 years now and am currently in Chile where I have a 2 year old son with a Chilean Passport, we are travelling to the UK for a couple of months and I want to make sure I take advantage of that time to apply for his British passport.

My question is do I need to register/apply for his citizenship first with the MN1 form and then apply for his passport?

Or is he a "british citizen by descent" automatically and I just need to apply for his passport?

Likewise what is the situation with him regarding the NHS? Does he need to complete the above processes before he is entitled to healthcare or is it automatic?

Although we will be travelling with insurance it's still something I'd like to know going in just encase anything happens and I have to make any decisions I'd like to be as informed as possible as to not waste time.

Yes. He should also be covered by the NHS.

Are you married to the child's mother?

Hopefully it won't be necessary but glad to hear he should be covered by the NHS.

Married to his Mother in Chile for 4 years. Am I likely to need her signature for anything or just copies of the marriage paperwork?

Why? As far as I can tell, the entire family will be overseas visitors as far as the NHS is concerned. Nationality will only affect lawfulness of presence.

It seems odd that the son can be admitted to the UK as a visitor but cannot be granted a visa.

It may be a late reply; but the answer is your children are British citizen by descent. They do not need to be registered. You need to show you are British at the time of their birth
