Hello all,

I have a quick question. I have recently received my ILR BRP on 10 years basis. I want to know after how long I can apply for a British passport.

Regards
Umar

Just to add I am married with a British citizen. I was on my second spouse extension which was till 2018 but as I have been in the UK for 10 years, I have applied for the ILR.

You can only apply for a British passport if you are a British citizen.

You must apply to naturalise as British citizen first.

If you are married to a British citizen, you can apply now, if you meet all the requirements (physically present exactly 3 years ago, within the absence limit etc.)

Hi CR001,

Thank you very much for your reply. So I need to apply for Naturalise first and then for the passport. Do you know which form I need to use and detailed requirements so I can check before applying.

Also once I have the Naturalise then can I apply for British passport straight away or have to wait?

Umar

Also once I have the Naturalise then can I apply for British passport straight away or have to wait? There is a joint citizenship and passport application scheme available through NCS (nationality checking service) at the Council where you apply for both at the same time. If you do the application by post yourself, you can only apply for a passport once you have attended your ceremony and are British.

Umar
A point to note, if you apply through NCS, the date of application is the date of appointment. If you apply by post on your own, the date of application is the date +1 day that HO receives it. It is imperative that you were physically present in the UK on exactly the same date 3 years ago. If you were not, your application will be refused and you will lose your fee.

You will only be British once you have been approved by UKVI and attended the Ciitizenship Ceremony, arranged by your council, where you receive your certificate. Then you will receive your passport (if applied via NCS JCAP) or you can then apply in the normal way (Post office / Online).

YES! The requirement for a spouse of BC, section 6(2) application is that you are married to a BC at the time of citizenship application, regardless of which route to ILR you took.

No. The process is :

1. Complete form AN and the passport form from the Post Office
2. Complete the two separate fee leaflets
3. Book and pay for your NCS appointment and attend NCS where they will copy your documents and give you all the originals back.
4. Then you wait. You will also have to enroll your biometrics at the Post Office once HO sends the letter to do it.
5. You will receive approval in the post, standard 2nd class mail, followed by a ceremony invitation letter.
6. Book your ceremony when you get the invitation letter.
7. Attend your ceremony and get your certificate.
8. NCS will inform HO once you have attended the ceremony.
9. HMPO will process your passport. It can take a week or two, it can also take a few weeks.
10. Passport delivered.

How long it takes varies, It can take a couple of months, it can also take many months.

To apply for citizenship on form AN the cost is £1236 (likely to increase on 6th April). The passport fee is separate and is £72.50.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to be a pain again, I have my NCS appointment in few days and I have completed the Form AN, Could you please explain the Section 8 as I am not sure what do I need to get from my employer. Can I just print my contract or do I need something else?

SECTION 8 Evidence of Crown service for applications made on the basis of marriage to or civil partnership with a British citizen in Crown or designated service.

This isn't relevant to you. I'm assuming that your wife doesn't work in a Crown or designated service.

Hi Guys,

Sorry me again. Ok I had my NCS appointment on 10th April and application received by Home office on 11th April.

Home office received my application on 11th but they haven't taken money out, and I went away on 16th April 2014.

I want to know which date will they consider for me to be present in the UK 11th April or the date they will register my case on to system?

Regards
Umar

Your date of application is the date of your NCS appointment, 10th April. So this is the date they will use to calculate the start of your qualifying period in 2014.

Hi Guys,

Quick question, as you can see I recently applied for Naturalisation and British passport. I submitted my application using NCS who checked my original documents and gave me back.

I want to know as I have my password my ILR card with me, am I allowed to travel on these while I am waiting for my decision?

Regards
Umar
