Hello,
I am starting to get my papers together to ask for the citizenship, I am getting very confused ( and frustrated !) about what I need..
I am Italian and I moved in the UK 17 years ago, I worked ever since.. but I stopped working in January 2017 simply because I can :) my husband is British we have been married for 9 years , we have two kids ( British) and we decided that it was time for me to stay at home for a while.. now, it looks like I need to have a sickness insurance because I have to ask for a residency card if I want to apply for citizenship?
it's bad enough that I have to ask for a residency card after 17 years .
So.. question is, do I really need this insurance?
Thanks

Do you have ILR or a DCPR (document certifying permanent residency??

To get the Document Certifying Permanent Residency (DCPR) you need to apply based on a 5 year qualifying period.

If you were a student or not working for any of those 5 years then you need private health insurance for that period.

Now... you decide which 5 year period you use to apply for DCPR. For example I applied in May 2016 based on a qualifying period of December 2004 to December 2009 (I am very good at keeping records from far back).

So in your case you could apply based on a qualifying period of 1 January 2012 to 1 January 2017, as you say you were working for the whole period, and therefore you wouldn't need private health insurance.

I hope the above is clear!
