British Citizenship after child turns 18

Hello everyone,
I would like some clarification about British citizenship application for a child who was not British at birth but obtained Certificate of Registration after parents settled.

My son is now 7 years old and as I said we applied for his BC after we settled and he obtained the Certificate of Registration. I know that he has to apply for BC again with form AN once he turns 18 (although who really knows what is going to happen after Brexit).

Anyway, let's assume everything is going to stay as it is, he would have to demonstrate he has been living in the UK for 5 year prior application, correct? So if he stayed in the UK until he is 18 then applied with form AN his certificate of registration wouldn't help him in his BC application at all, correct?
What if we decided to leave the UK for 10 years and came back when he is 17 years old, would his Certificate of Registration be still valid? And then once he turns 18 he would not be able to meet the residence requirement (5 years) needed for BC, Am I correct?
Thank you for your time

Kind Regards
C.

Really?? Who told you that or where did you hear that from?

It is not true, you have been misinformed. You cannot register as British when 18 if you are already British after a successful MN1 application.

Hi CR001
I might have read it the wrong way but here is the link to MN1 Guide https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... y_2017.pdf
Chapter 2 says" Children must be under 18 years old when the application is made. Once they reach
the age of 18 they must apply for British citizenship as adults, either by registration
where they have an entitlement, or by naturalisation ...."

You have misread. It simply means that a child over 18 (whether dependent or not) is unable to use form MN1 and must instead use form AN from the day they turn 18.

OK CR001,thank you for your clarification. So, my son's Certificate of Registration has the same value as the Certificate of Naturalization and nothing is going to happen once he turns 18.
I'm glad to know it

Correct yes. No change once he turns 18.
