Name change on Indian passport (currently on ILR)

Hello everyone,

My son currently have the Indian passport – he was born in the UK in 2014. He (and all of us) are on ILR (now for >12 months). I have changed his name recently and have got it approved by the court (deed is done).

I have two queries and any guidance would be much appreciated:
i) Can I ‘directly’ apply for his British citizenship or do I need to first change his passport to a new Indian passport and then apply for the British citizenship
ii) if it’s the former what’s the process of applying for a new Indian passport.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Dilip

To register him as British you will need to change his foreign passport before you do that.

Please ask Indian passport renewal questions in the 'Other Countries' sub forum further down on the main forum page.

Hi CR001 (sorry to use this name as don't have the real one),

Thanks for your advice - I managed to get the deed poll done and get the appointment with Indian embassy. Should be straight forward expect that I also need to advertise this in a local UK newspaper. Most newspaper are quoting in excess of £200 for 4-5 lines (!!). Are you or any other members in the forum aware of any cheaper way of doing it.

Many thanks and your response is much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Dilip
