Citizenship by birth

Hi,

I hope someone can help me. I was born in the UK in 1966 and was sent to Nigeria at the age of 2 by my parents who were both Nigerian students at the time. My parents eventually joined me in Nigeria in 1973, and I returned in 1987, at the age of 21.

In the eyes of the law, am I a British citizen? Please note that whilst in Nigeria I did not naturalize or obtain Nigerian citizenship.

Many thanks.

Matt

Yes, you are a British citizen otherwise than by descent and can apply directly for a British passport.

You will most likely need your original birth certificate.

I know somebody in the identical situation personally (born to Nigerian students in the UK before 1983) and both siblings born in the UK (and their children) have British passports. Their remaining siblings (it is a large family), born in Nigeria, are Nigerian citizens only.
