Hello,

I wonder if I can get your advice on this.

I’ve been working in the UK on Tier 2 general visa since May 2015. I’m getting married to my British fiancé and I looked on the government website about criteria for naturalisation after marriage to British citizen and it’s not very clear whether I need to have indefinite leave to remain or not and whether 3 years in the UK is all I need to apply for that. Also, I passed IELTS exam with high score as part of my visa application to come to the UK and again it’s not very clear if I’m required to pass any further English exams for the naturalisation application or not.

Hope you can advice on that.

Many thanks.

British citizenship requires the applicant to have ILR (or PR) before qualifying. This means that you will have to complete 5 years on your current visa, after which assuming you meet all the standard requirements you can submit your application.

You will have to see what the requirements are for English language in 2020 as the rules may well change before then.
