Citizenship after ILR

Hello everyone,

I will be greatful if you can furnish me with some clarification please.

My Mum got her ILR this month after being on DLR- 6 years (3 years+ 3 years)

When she applies for Citizenship, why does she have to send her ILR BRP card back to the Home Office?

If she does not apply for British Passport, how is she expected to travel in and out of UK without a BRP card and without a British Passort?

Has the Home Office now placed an expectation on people to get a British Passport?

I apologise if these questions have been asked before?

I still have my ILR visa on my old Passport and whenever i renew my passport i always carry the old one that has the ILR visa in it and show the UKBA when i come into UK.

Than you all for your time

ILR ceases once British citizenship is granted. Once citizenship is approved, she is required to return her ILR BRP card to HO within 5 days after attending the ceremony or face a £1000 fine. The card becomes invalid and recently a member has reported that his BRP card was taken away on arrival back to the UK after a holiday (British but didn't apply for passport either).

She can apply for citizenship and passport in a joint application. Online BC app currently taking about 2 months and if she applies for passport at the same time, she should get it within 2 weeks after she attends her ceremony.
